Therapy metaphors utilise concepts, illustrations, or narratives to help clients consider alternative perspectives regarding their concerns. The "new ties" metaphor in counselling demonstrates how therapeutic processes can bridge a troubled past with an envisioned future marked by healing. In this framework, ropes and knots are used metaphorically to represent the various techniques, modalities, and approaches that support recovery and personal growth by providing stability amid life’s challenges.

The act of tying a knot symbolises personal exploration and an individual’s pursuit of meaning and restoration. Different knot-tying methods are selected based on specific intentions, needs, or goals; for instance, binding knots may be applied to secure items or suspend objects. At New Ties Counselling, our objective is to assist clients in safely evolving their roles and enhancing adaptive capacities as they advance through the recovery and healing journey.

At New Ties Counselling, we recognise the potential for growth and change within every family. Our mission is to empower clients to discover fulfilling and meaningful lives that are consistent with their values, abilities, and interests. We serve children, adolescents, adults, and seniors from diverse backgrounds

Joanna is a clinical counsellor with a master’s degree in counselling psychology. She provides therapeutic support to individuals across the lifespan addressing challenges related to addictions, grief, and trauma. She specializes in the treatment of grief, anxiety, and dissociative disorders, particularly when these conditions co-occur with addictions and stressor-related disorders. Joanna’s approach also incorporates targeted interventions for neurodiverse individuals, recognizing and addressing the unique impacts grief and trauma may have within this population through comprehensive treatment plans.

Grief Counselling: Joanna provides guidance for individuals experiencing bereavement, grief, or mourning following losses or the death of a loved one. She assists clients in addressing various emotions, including guilt, anger, abandonment, and hopelessness that may arise after a loss. Joanna helps navigate the different stages associated with grief, such as numbing, denial, yearning, searching, disorganization, and despair, and works toward supporting healthy expression, reorganization, and healing.

Trauma Counselling: Joanna provides support to both children and adults as they navigate traumatic experiences. Incorporating recent advancements in neuroscience and attachment research, she offers a variety of evidence-based interventions for traumatic stress and developmental trauma. Joanna assists individuals in addressing complex effects of trauma, including shame, self-blame, guilt, and associated physical manifestations such as tension, fatigue, discomfort, and pain. She teaches practical relaxation techniques designed to mitigate physiological responses to trauma, guiding clients toward reclaiming a sense of safety within their bodies and promoting the potential for healing and recovery. Survivors of sexual violence often benefit from Joanna’s expertise in illustrating the body’s adaptive capacity and its evolving role as a source of positive meaning throughout the healing process.

Sofia is a Registered Psychiatric Nurse associated with the Grey Nuns Hospital and the Addiction Recovery Centre (ARC) at The Alberta Hospital Edmonton. In addition to her nursing career, she serves as a combat engineer with the Canadian Armed Forces and has expertise in supporting individuals coping with addiction as well as veterans. Sofia's clinical background includes specialized services in health stabilization, comprehensive assessment, and therapeutic counselling. Her practice is grounded in a recovery-oriented, person-centred framework, integrating approaches such as somatic psychology (embodiment), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MCBT).

Sofia recognises that the onset of addiction often originates from significant life stressors and the presence of various risk factors. In individuals affected by such circumstances or trauma, neurobiological pathways may become altered, increasing susceptibility to both substance addictions (including stimulants and depressants) and behavioural addictions (such as gambling, sex addiction, or eating disorders).

Sofia supports the implementation of respectful and evidence-based treatment options. She engages with clients at their current stage, utilising harm reduction, moderation management, or sobriety-based strategies as appropriate. Sofia possesses a comprehensive understanding of the progression of chemical dependency and the neurological effects of medication, as well as the complex psychopathology of addiction, which may include co-occurring mental health disorders often linked to trauma histories such as childhood sexual abuse, abandonment, or neglect.

Sofia recognises that addiction is a disorder affecting choice, with key areas of the brain responsible for decision-making and volition being impaired during addiction. This can make independent recovery challenging. With her professional expertise and understanding, Sofia provides guidance throughout the recovery process.
