Therapy metaphors use a concept, illustration, or story to help clients see alternative ways of looking at something. Our therapy metaphor, the "new ties", illustrates the two parts that you tie together in counselling therapy: your past, strong self and your current, distressed self, maybe; or your toxic, self-destructive past and your projected healed self. Tying a knot is a metaphor for self-discovery and suggests people's search for meaning and healing. There are a few ways to tie a knot, depending on the intention, meaning, and goals you set your mind to: the binding knots are used to secure items together (slow, organic growth, and natural integration of alters) whereas tying a knot could be used to hang something (radical acceptance and transformative adaptations).

Our mission is to empower our clients to find their fulfilling, meaningful selves that align with their values, skills, and passions. Joanna is a master’s level clinical counsellor who helps children, youth, adults, and seniors navigate their grief or trauma (sometimes both). She specializes in grief, trauma, and dissociative disorders in co-occurrence with trauma and stressor-related disorders. Joanna also understands and targets through her treatment plans the impacts of grief and trauma on neurodiverse people.
Grief Counselling: Joanna will be your companion through the complex stages of bereavement, grief, and mourning when you experience losses or the death of a loved one. She will support you through conflicting emotions such as guilt and anger at someone who had died, feelings like abandonment and hopelessness that are felt in the aftermath of someone's death. Joanna will guide you through the journey and stages of numbing and denial, followed by the yearning and searching, disorganization and despair, and will bring you home to a healthy expression of grief, reorganization, and healing.
Trauma Counselling: Joanna supports children and adults to adapt to traumatic experiences. She uses new emerging findings from neuroscience and attachment research to offer a range of effective treatments for traumatic stress and developmental trauma in children and adults. Joanna helps trauma survivors to learn to confront their shame, self-blame, and guilt related to the trauma and its various forms of embodiment: tension, fatigue, discomfort, and chronic or acute pain. Joanna teaches trauma survivors relaxation skills to reverse physiological trauma response; she will help you learn how to be safe again in your body, and that your body is capable of healing and repair. Survivors of sexual violence find value and hope in learning from Joanna how the body changes all the time, it is flexible and mouldable, and it becomes a new source of positive meanings in healing.

Sofia is a Registered Psychiatric Nurse affiliated with the Grey Nuns Hospital and the Addiction Recovery Centre (ARC) at The Alberta Hospital Edmonton. Sofia is a combat engineer with the Canadian Armed Forces and specializes in working with people who struggle with addictions and veterans. Sofia's clinical experience draws from specialized services in health stabilization, assessment, and counselling. Her practice is recovery centred and is rooted in a person-centred approach, integrating also somatic psychology (embodiment), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MCBT) techniques.
Sofia understands that the journey into addiction starts with an overwhelming experience and presence of risk factors in people's lives. An addict's brain circuitry is already altered by said distresses or trauma, and they are primed and highly vulnerable to addiction to any substance (stimulants, depressants) or behaviours (process addictions such as gambling, sex, eating etc.).
Sofia advocates for less degrading treatment options, and will meet her clients at whatever point they are in their lives, either through harm reduction, moderation management, or sobriety approaches. Sofia understands the various stages of chemical dependence and the brain's responses to medication; and she also understands the more pathological aspects of addiction as accompanied by co-occurring psychiatric illnesses, sometimes associated with a history of trauma (such as childhood sexual abuse/ abandonment/ neglect).
Sofia understands that addiction is a disorder of choice, and that the most fundamental brain centres responsible for choice and volition become compromised in addiction, which makes the recovery journey all the same more difficult on your own. Sofia will guide you through the recovery process with understanding and professional knowledge.
